SYNOPSIS

AFRICAN DREAMERS is a documentary on five African girls at a significant transition in their lives. Five young women who live in four African countries that so many people leave, in the search for a better life. Wangare e Grace, Deborah, Marveille e Mariam have decided to stay and try to change their difficult lives. They fight against prejudice, old beliefs, violence and ancient cultures that far too often violate the universal human rights.

Through dusty roads, shanty towns and breathtaking landscapes, their stories have approached us. Faced with life’s problems, big and small, each one of them is trying to reach her dream. A dream of redemption.

“I will continue to fight for girls to grow up and become women without suffering mutilation. All African
girls should become women and be able to dream. I am sure this is possible”.

These are the words of Nice Nailantei Leng’ete, a 26 year old Maasai woman who has been fighting for the rights of young African girls for years. Everything started from these words.

AFRICAN DREAMERS tries to give a voice to that part of the world that very often does not have one. The weaker part of African society: girls and women. We have involved some of the many people who have become passionate about these stories, including cinema and theater actors and actresses who have lent their voices to their protagonists.

Five intertwined stories. Five voices accompanied by an essential narration. Images, sounds, colors speak for themselves. We want you to picture that Africa that you cannot imagine. This is our mission. The mission of Hic Sunt leones. That Africa whose voice we do not hear. Not even a weak breath, among the news we receive every day. The seven of us believe that these simple stories of courage and freedom should become our and your stories too.

    ROBERTO CAVALIERI

As a photojournalist, he has followed some of the main conflicts in Africa for about 15 years (Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Guinea Bissau), exploring the social and economic aspects of their causes and consequences. He has worked with Italian newspapers, NGOs and
foundations on the publication of articles and reportages. His most relevant works include a reportage on gold trafficking and the social and political destabilization of Burundi and Zaire. He has photographed
the prisons of five African countries, included in the book Prima della Libertà (Ega Torino) on the living conditions of inmates.

    FRANCESCO CAVALLI

Francesco Cavalli works in communication. He is general director of the Icaro network, which includes activities in the field of radio, television, the Internet and a video production center. Author and production manager of dozens of documentaries and several TV programs, including Radici on RaiTre. One of the founders of the Ilaria Alpi Award for TV journalism, which he has been directing in its 20 years of history, he has closely followed the case of Ilaria Alpi with reportages, inquiries and several journeys to Somalia.
In 2014 he published the novel La strada di Ilaria (Milieu edizioni). Creator and secretary general of the Roberto Morrione Award for investigative journalism. In 2001-2009 he was the councilor for culture of the city of Riccione and vice president of the national coordinating center of local bodies for peace and human rights. He has contributed to the organization of the most recent Perugia-Assisi peace marches, including the one to Palestine in 2012.

    DAVIDE DEMICHELIS

Freelancer and documentary-maker, he spent more than half of his fifty years of life traveling for work. He writes everything he can, wherever he can: the web, newspapers, the radio, books and, most importantly, for the TV (La Stampa, Panorama, Radio Svizzera Italiana, Baldini & Castoldi, National Geographic, NHK and many others). As he was not born in the trade, he took personal risks to do what he believes is the best job in the world: he spent his own money to travel, and sometimes risked his life too (despite the notorious immobility of people from Turin… where he is from). Kilometer after kilometer, things have changed a bit. Since the beginning of this millennium, he works mainly with RaiTre. Author and presenter of a few hundred documentaries and reportages shot in about 80 countries for Il pianeta delle Meraviglie, Timbuctu, I viaggi di Davide, Geo, Nanuk, Kilimangiaro. Creator, author and presenter of Radici, broadcast by RaiTre.

    ANGELO FERRARI

Professional journalist of Agenzia Italia (AGI), where he works for the Africa office. Previously a
correspondent from central Africa for AGI, he has been working for years on African matters and has followed the worst tragedies of the continent: from the war in Rwanda to the war in Somalia, from the
Democratic Republic of the Congo to Sierra Leone.

    RAFFAELE MASTO

Raffaele Masto is a journalist and writer. He works as foreign editor at Radio Popolare and for the Africa
magazine. He has been following the crises and wars in the African continent of the last twenty years. He has written several books, including Africa and L’Africa del Tesoro (Sperling & Kupfer); Buongiorno Africa (Mondadori); Califfato Nero (Laterza). His last work was published by Egea in 2019: La Variabile Africana. He writes for the blog Buongiornoafrica.it

    ALESSANDRO ROCCA

Freelancer, journalist, photographer, director and author from Turin. He wrote and directed the documentary film The Consul’s List, taken from the book by Luciano Scalettari. Co-produced by Rai Cinema, Sgi Srl, Doc Film Fund Piemonte and Media UE, distributed by Journeyman.Tv (UK). For RaiTre, he is author and filmmaker of the program Radici. Author and director of the documentary film Cesare Lombroso, il lato oscuro, and the series VAP for SkyArteHd. He is the author of dozens of reportages,
inquiries and documentaries for TV programs Il pianeta delle meraviglie, Kilimagiaro, Timbuctù and Geo on RaiTre, Effetto reale (La7), Matatu (RaiNews24), SkyTg24, TG RSI (Tv Svizzera Italiana), shot in dozens of countries in the world, on issues related to international trafficking, conflicts and environmental and
social issues. He collaborates with magazines and newspapers.

    LUCIANO SCALETTARI

A journalist since 1987, he has been working for Famiglia Cristiana since April 1992. He is currently its
vice editor-in-chief. Special envoy for 13 years, he focused mainly on the African continent (he traveled to over 30 countries in sub-Saharan Africa) and investigative journalism. Among others, he has
Round Robin, with Luigi Grimaldi). Since 2007, he coordinates, with Alberto Laggia, the laboratory for social journalism La voce di chi non ha voce, organized by the A.Chiodi school of journalism in Mestre. He is co-founder and contributor of Atlante dei Conflitti e delle Guerre nel Mondo, now at its 9th edition.
